A toddler bike is a two-wheeled pedal-less bike that teaches kids as young as 18-months to balance on two wheels. After a brief learning period, toddlers and kids learn to balance and ride on their bikes without any assistance.
After spending time on a toddler bike it is very common for kids to move up to a pedal bike without the need for training wheels. Toddler bikes teach children to ride while balanced, whereas training wheels teach children to ride while unbalanced. So after learning to balance, learning how to pedal is much quicker than usual and is not inhibited by training wheels.
Toddler bikes do not require a footrest. While coasting along kids naturally pick up their feet.
Kids generally ride toddler bikes for 2 to 3 years, depending on the age they start. Most toddlers and kids who master a toddler bike move up to a pedal bike around their 4th birthday.
The best age is pretty much when they can first fit on a toddler bike. For smaller bikes this can be around 18-months old. Typically toddlers and kids enjoy toddler bikes from 18-months to 5 years old or until they move up to a pedal bike. It is our experience that the younger a child starts to ride a toddler bike, the younger they will be able to ride a pedal bike.
